  • Theme: Habitats. Trailblazing Tracks – Embark on a journey to discover the natural homes of animals, using their lifestyles and skills as clues to track down just where and why they live where they do.
  • Animals: Goat, guinea pig, small parrot, blue tongue skink, earthworm.

TUESDAY

  • Theme: Adaptations. Survival Gear – Explore how animals use their natural apparel for their adventures of finding food, a mate, and avoiding predators.
  • Animals: Sheep, rabbit, chicken, ball python, leopard gecko.

WEDNESDAY

  • Theme: Fight/Flight. Courageous Creatures – Dive into the ways animals handle challenges, from bold battles to crafty escapes. 
  • Animals: miniature horse or donkey, dog, dove, turtle or tortoise, bearded dragon.

THURSDAY

  • Theme: Movement. Mission of Motion – Unearth the many ways animals move, whether they hop, slither, soar, or crawl, and why they don't all do it in the same way.
  • Animals: Dog, rabbit, chicken, rosy boa or sand boa, blue death-feigning beetle.

FRIDAY

  • Theme: Compassion. Guardian Quest – Discover the treasures of the animal kingdom and how we can become their ultimate protectors.

Description

NEW: We are excited to announce that with the completion of our new building, we can now arrange for an afternoon rest period for PreK which allows us to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. Many of you have been requesting this and we are glad we can accommodate this now. For those who wish to pick up early, you may do so for any grade, but understand we don't prorate the lost time, and the campers will miss some of the scheduled animals/activities when they leave early.

 

Children must be able to confidently use the bathroom on their own, including wiping.

 

Children under 5 cannot pet reptiles.

  • Animals: Miniature horse or donkey, rabbit, large parrot, ball python, leopard gecko.

TUESDAY

  • Theme: Diet. Potion Masters – Learn how animal create their own 'potions', from venomous defenses to healing secretions, and explore the magical effects these natural mixtures can have. 
  • Animals: Goat, guinea pig, dove, rosy boa or sand boa, frog.

WEDNESDAY

  • Theme: Culture. Mythical Beasts – Journey into the world of mythology and folklore to uncover how animals inspire legendary stories and symbolize human beliefs. 
  • Animals: Miniature donkey or horse, dog, chicken, bearded dragon, blue death-feigning beetle.

THURSDAY

  • Theme: Defense mechanisms. Wild Illusionists – Marvel at animals that can shapeshift or vanish (at least to predators' eyes) with natural camouflages and trickery worth of a wizard's spellbook
  • Animals: Dog, rabbit, medium parrot, tortoise or turtle, Madagascar hissing cockroach.

FRIDAY

  • Theme: Habitats. Enchanted Realms – Step into the magical habitats where animals thrive, from hidden dens to fantastical forests, and explore how these realms shape their lives.

  • Theme: Keeper. Wildlife Academy - Step into the role of a zookeeper by assisting our animal care team with animal ambassador enclosure care. Tour our cat and dog adoption center to discover how we care for dozens of animals each day and learn about the essential training required for a rewarding career in animal care.

Description

NEW: We are excited to announce that with the completion of our new building, we can now arrange for an afternoon rest period for PreK which allows us to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. Many of you have been requesting this and we are glad we can accommodate this now. For those who wish to pick up early, you may do so for any grade, but understand we don't prorate the lost time, and the campers will miss some of the scheduled animals/activities when they leave early.

 

Children must be able to confidently use the bathroom on their own, including wiping.

 

Children under 5 cannot pet reptiles.

MONDAY

  • Theme: Habitats. Trailblazing Tracks – Embark on a journey to discover the natural homes of animals, using their lifestyles and skills as clues to track down just where and why they live where they do.
  • Animals: Goat, guinea pig, small parrot, blue tongue skink, earthworm.

TUESDAY

  • Theme: Adaptations. Survival Gear – Explore how animals use their natural apparel for their adventures of finding food, a mate, and avoiding predators.
  • Animals: Sheep, rabbit, chicken, ball python, leopard gecko.

WEDNESDAY

  • Theme: Fight/Flight. Courageous Creatures – Dive into the ways animals handle challenges, from bold battles to crafty escapes. 
  • Animals: miniature horse or donkey, dog, dove, turtle or tortoise, bearded dragon.

THURSDAY

  • Theme: Movement. Mission of Motion – Unearth the many ways animals move, whether they hop, slither, soar, or crawl, and why they don't all do it in the same way.
  • Animals: Dog, rabbit, chicken, rosy boa or sand boa, blue death-feigning beetle.

FRIDAY

Take an exclusive tour of our onsite small animal hospital and learn about the schooling and skills veterinarians need to care for animals.

  • Theme: Keeper. Wildlife Academy - Step into the role of a zookeeper by assisting our animal care team with animal ambassador enclosure care. Tour our cat and dog adoption center to discover how we care for dozens of animals each day and learn about the essential training required for a rewarding career in animal care.

  • Theme: Culture. Mythical Beasts – Journey into the world of mythology and folklore to uncover how animals inspire legendary stories and symbolize human beliefs.

  • Theme: Defense mechanisms. Wild Illusionists – Marvel at animals that can shapeshift or vanish (at least to predators' eyes) with natural camouflages and trickery worth of a wizard's spellbook

Description

HOLIDAY NOTE: We are closed on the Fourth of July, therefore this week of camp only runs for 4 days. You can still sign up for the whole week, but it will not be considered a 'weekly' sign up like the other weeks, meaning there is no camp shirt or 5th day free - this is just an option to sign up for all the 4 daily days quickly. Otherwise you can select each day as desired if you don't want all 4 in the week.

  • Theme: Adaptations. Survival Gear – Explore how animals use their natural apparel for their adventures of finding food, a mate, and avoiding predators.

THURSDAY

  • Theme: Fight/Flight. Courageous Creatures – Dive into the ways animals handle challenges, from bold battles to crafty escapes.

Description

NEW: We are excited to announce that with the completion of our new building, we can now arrange for an afternoon rest period for PreK which allows us to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. Many of you have been requesting this and we are glad we can accommodate this now. For those who wish to pick up early, you may do so for any grade, but understand we don't prorate the lost time, and the campers will miss some of the scheduled animals/activities when they leave early.

 

Children must be able to confidently use the bathroom on their own, including wiping.

 

Children under 5 cannot pet reptiles.

  • Theme: Defense mechanisms. Wild Illusionists – Marvel at animals that can shapeshift or vanish (at least to predators' eyes) with natural camouflages and trickery worth of a wizard's spellbook

FRIDAY

Description

NEW: We are excited to announce that with the completion of our new building, we can now arrange for an afternoon rest period for PreK which allows us to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. Many of you have been requesting this and we are glad we can accommodate this now. For those who wish to pick up early, you may do so for any grade, but understand we don't prorate the lost time, and the campers will miss some of the scheduled animals/activities when they leave early.

 

Children must be able to confidently use the bathroom on their own, including wiping.

 

Children under 5 cannot pet reptiles.

Description

NEW: We are excited to announce that with the completion of our new building, we can now arrange for an afternoon rest period for PreK which allows us to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. Many of you have been requesting this and we are glad we can accommodate this now. For those who wish to pick up early, you may do so for any grade, but understand we don't prorate the lost time, and the campers will miss some of the scheduled animals/activities when they leave early.

 

Children must be able to confidently use the bathroom on their own, including wiping.

 

Children under 5 cannot pet reptiles.

  • Theme: Culture. Mythical Beasts – Journey into the world of mythology and folklore to uncover how animals inspire legendary stories and symbolize human beliefs.

  • Theme: Defense mechanisms. Wild Illusionists – Marvel at animals that can shapeshift or vanish (at least to predators' eyes) with natural camouflages and trickery worth of a wizard's spellbook

Description

Summer Critter Camp is San Diego’s best animal camp for kids Preschool through 8th grade! Children will experience daily animal interactions that will amaze them as they get up close and personal with a variety of species including birds, small mammals, reptiles, large mammals, and invertebrates. Our summer camp activities are different each day and include animal themed games, crafts, songs, and more. There’s something for everyone at Summer Critter Camp, and a great time for all!

 

We offer registration in both a daily and a weekly form. Please play close attention to the text when you sign up to ensure you’re selecting the option you want.

  • Daily registration: a single day and applies the daily rate, regardless of how many days you register for. Allows flexibility to fit your schedule needs!
  • Weekly registration: a single week and applies the weekly rate, but we do not prorate or transfer credits if you don’t attend all the days of that week. Best value option and campers receive a free t-shirt! No weekly option Week 5, Fourth of July week. We are closed on Fourth of July.

We offer an alternating weekly theme. Please note our animal ambassadors remain the same throughout the week, but which animals they meet on which day, the daily themes, discussions, crafts, games, and activities change between the two weekly themes. 

  • Odd Weeks: these are weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Adventure with Animals theme: embark on a global journey to uncover unique habitats, bizarre behaviors and traits, and how these amazing animals thrive in the wild. Solve clues and unravel nature’s mysteries!
  • Even Weeks: these are weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Magical World of Animals theme: explore the enchanting adaptations that make animals seem like real-life wizards. From camouflage to waterproofing, discover the extraordinary magic of nature’s abilities!
  • 7th-8th graders can attend camp on select weeks (weeks 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, nd 9). They have the same theme each week. Careers with Critters theme: dive into the world of animal professionals! Meet industry experts, experience exclusive animal activities, develop leadership skills, and discover careers that work with animals.

Each day campers will

  • Create a craft related to the theme
  • Participate in a class activity focusing on the theme
  • Enjoy a team-building game!

 

Itinerary

Campers rotate locations and activities every 20-40 min. They meet 5 different animals through presentations with interactive components that are dispersed throughout the day. Campers also have a snack time which includes some free play, a lunch time which includes some free play, and class activities and games. Activities are interspersed between the breaks and games.

  • 8:45-9:15: check in period, campers free play in our pavilion.
  • 9:15-9:30: the class will circle up to discuss the day, camp rules, and icebreakers.
  • 10:00-10:50: snack period for PreK-2nd grade.
  • 10:50-11:30: snack period for 3rd-8th grade.
  • 11:30-12:20: lunch period for PreK-2nd grade.
  • 12:10-1:00: lunch period for 3rd-8th grade.
  • 2:45-3:15: check out period for PreK-8th grade. Campers stay circled up with their class and play quiet games and review their day.

 

NEW: We are excited to announce that with the completion of our new building, we can now arrange for an afternoon rest period for PreK which allows us to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. Many of you have been requesting this and we are glad we can accommodate this now. For those who wish to pick up early, you may do so for any grade, but understand we don't prorate the lost time, and the campers will miss some of the scheduled animals/activities when they leave early.

 

Noteworthy

  • Snack is not provided, but lunch can be purchased for an additional fee per child per day.
  • Drinks aren't provided or readily available onsite. We have water bottle refill stations.
  • If your child has an aide at school and you plan to have them attend with your child, please call us at 858-756-4117 ext. 318 so that we can help them complete the fingerprint process. All aides MUST complete fingerprinting in order to attend.
  • All campers must be able to use the restroom confidently and on their own.
  • Animals assigned to a theme may vary depending on animal health, safety, and availability.
  • Extended care available to add-on which allows 8am drop off for PreK-8th grade, and 5pm pick up for PreK-8th grade.
