  • Theme: Training to Survive – Animals learn, practice, and problem-solve in fascinating ways. Campers will compare instinct versus learning and discover how animals develop skills that help them succeed in the wild and alongside people.

WEDNESDAY

  • Theme: Built to Perform – Animals may not wear helmets or cleats, but their bodies are perfectly designed for their roles. From wool and scales to claws and shells, campers will uncover how animal adaptations act like high-performance gear for survival.

Description

Summer Critter Camp is San Diego’s best animal camp for kids Preschool through 8th grade! Children will experience daily animal interactions that will amaze them as they get up close and personal with a variety of species including birds, small mammals, reptiles, large mammals, and invertebrates. Our summer camp activities are different each day and include animal themed games, crafts, songs, and more. There’s something for everyone at Summer Critter Camp, and a great time for all!

 

We offer registration in both a daily (drop-in)and a weekly form.

  • Daily registration: a single day and applies the daily rate, regardless of how many days you register for. Allows flexibility to fit your schedule needs!
  • Weekly registration: a single week and applies the weekly rate, but we do not prorate or transfer credits if you don’t attend all the days of that week. Best value option and campers receive a FREE t-shirt! No weekly option Week 5, Fourth of July week. We are closed on July third.

We offer an alternating weekly theme. Please note our animal ambassadors remain the same throughout the week, but which animals they meet on which day, the daily themes, discussions, crafts, games, and activities change between the two weekly themes. 

  • Odd Weeks: these are weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Amazing Animal Athletes theme: embark on a global journey to uncover unique habitats, bizarre behaviors and traits, and how these amazing animals thrive in the wild. Solve clues and unravel nature’s mysteries!
  • Even Weeks: these are weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Bioscience and Beyond theme: explore the enchanting adaptations that make animals seem like real-life wizards. From camouflage to waterproofing, discover the extraordinary magic of nature’s abilities!
  • 7th-8th graders can attend camp on select weeks (weeks 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9). They have the same theme each week. Careers with Critters theme: dive into the world of animal professionals! Meet industry experts, experience exclusive animal activities, develop leadership skills, and discover careers that work with animals.

Each day campers will

  • Create a craft related to the theme
  • Participate in a class activity focusing on the theme
  • Enjoy a team-building game!

 

Preschool Notes

  • PreK has an afternoon rest period in order to extend their camp to the full length like the other grades. This isn't a nap, although cots are provided, but a time to regroup and bring the energy of the day back down through stories and quiet games before proceeding into the remaining camp activities.
  • Children must be able to confidently use the bathroom on their own, including wiping.
  • Children under 5 cannot pet reptiles.

Itinerary

Campers rotate locations and activities every 20-40 min. They meet 5 different animals through presentations with interactive components that are dispersed throughout the day. Campers also have a snack time which includes some free play, a lunch time which includes some free play, and class activities and games. Activities are interspersed between the breaks and games.

  • 8:45-9:15: check in period, campers free play on assigned playgrounds.
  • 9:15-9:30: the class will circle up to discuss the day, camp rules, and icebreakers.
  • 10:10-10:50: snack period. Depending on number of classes running, some groups might be staggered back by 20 min.
  • 11:30-12:20: lunch period. Depending on number of classes running, some groups might be staggered back by 30 min.
  • 2:45-3:15: check out period. Campers stay circled up with their class and play quiet games and review their day.

Noteworthy

  • Snack is not provided. Lunch can be purchased for an additional fee per child per day.
  • Drinks aren't provided, but we have drinking fountains and water bottle refill stations.
  • If your child has an aide at school and you plan to have them attend with your child, please call us at 858-756-4117 ext. 406 so that we can help them complete the fingerprint process. All aides MUST complete fingerprinting in order to attend.
  • All campers must be able to use the restroom confidently and on their own.
  • Animals assigned to a theme may vary depending on animal health, safety, and availability.
  • Extended care available to add-on which allows 8am drop off and/or 5pm pick up.
